At 16:58 (Local Time)<\/strong> on 13 February 2023, a strong earthquake struck Romania<\/strong>. The epicenter near the city of T\u00e2rgu Jiu, the capital of the district of Gorj, in the historical region of Oltenia has about 80 thousand inhabitants. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2<\/strong> on the Richter scale and a depth of 10km<\/strong>. At the moment there is no news of any damage, but strictly in the epicentral areas, there may be even if not serious. This event has nothing to do with what struck south-eastern Turkey and Syria on 6 February.<\/strong> This is an intraplate earthquake<\/strong> connected to the Carpathian orogeny. The tremor was also weakly recorded by Italian seismographs.<\/p>\n

Romania is a seismic region in Eastern Europe The most powerful earthquake<\/strong> to hit the country in modern times was on 4<\/strong> March 1977<\/strong>. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter<\/strong> scale and killed nearly 2000 people in Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova.<\/strong> Two other powerful earthquakes were those of 30 August 1986, magnitude 7.1, which caused nearly 200 casualties,<\/strong> and on 30 May 1990, magnitude 6.9, which caused 14 casualties.<\/p>\n
