{"id":9427,"date":"2023-01-10T10:57:01","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T10:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.geostru.eu\/?p=9427"},"modified":"2023-01-16T09:38:20","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T09:38:20","slug":"eurocode-7-geotechnical-design-what-is-eurocode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.geostru.eu\/en\/eurocode-7-geotechnical-design-what-is-eurocode\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurocode 7: Geotechnical Design &#8211; What is Eurocode?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The EN Eurocodes apply to the structural design of buildings and other civil engineering works including, geotechnical aspects,\u00a0structural fire design and\u00a0situations including earthquakes, execution and temporary structures.\u00a0For the design of special construction works (e.g. nuclear installations, dams, etc) other provisions than those in the EN Eurocodes might be necessary.<br \/>\nIt is basically used in 27 European Union countries, including Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. However, other countries outside of Europe have also introduced Eurocode, which is Singapore. Previously, Singapore used the British Standard, but since April 2015, the use of the British Standard was abolished and changed to Eurocode.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"ecl-u-mb-2xl\">\n<h3 id=\"why-the-eurocodes\" class=\"ecl-u-type-heading-2\">Why the Eurocodes?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ecl\" style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<p>GThe EN Eurocodes are the\u00a0<strong>reference design codes<\/strong>. After publication of the\u00a0<a title=\"National Standards\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/en-eurocodes-implementation\/national-standards\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"14c49a59-f8b4-484e-8dd8-ce2d2fb55e31\">National Standard<\/a>\u00a0transposing the Eurocodes and the National Annexes, all conflicting standards shall be withdrawn.\u00a0It is\u00a0<a title=\"Are the EN Eurocodes Mandatory?\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/en-eurocodes-about-en-eurocodes\/are-en-eurocodes-mandatory\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"2eaf8e5e-2bb1-4cfc-aa6c-3472c624af53\">mandatory<\/a>\u00a0that the Member States accept designs to the EN Eurocodes.<\/p>\n<p>The Eurocodes are currently at the stage of\u00a0<a title=\"Maintenance\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/en-eurocodes\/maintenance\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"b16d850f-8d7e-418b-9583-0e3e9adc8153\">maintenance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Evolution of the EN Eurocodes\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/2nd-generation\/evolution-en-eurocodes\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"1f788ff5-8a70-4aed-93a6-04cf09c8f3d1\">evolution<\/a>\u00a0in order to address the variety of new methods, new materials, new regulatory requirements and new societal needs developing and to extend\u00a0<a title=\"Further harmonisation of the EN Eurocodes\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/en-eurocodes\/further-harmonisation-en-eurocodes\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"108a683e-5c9f-492b-a08f-b4cf359236d2\">harmonisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">International use<\/h3>\n<p>There is a considerable interest in the use of EN Eurocodes outside EU\/EFTA by countries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>whose National Standards are based on European National Standards that will soon be withdrawn;<\/li>\n<li>who want to update their National Standards based on technically advanced codes;<\/li>\n<li>who are interested in trading with the European Union and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.efta.int\/\">EFTA<\/a>\u00a0Member States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The EN Eurocodes may be used for the above purposes, because they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a\u00a0<strong>complete set of design standards<\/strong>\u00a0that cover in a comprehensive manner all principal construction materials, all major fields of structural engineering and a wide range of types of structures and products;<\/li>\n<li>the most\u00a0<strong>up-to-date<\/strong>\u00a0codes of practice;<\/li>\n<li><strong>flexible<\/strong>, offering the possibility for each country to adapt the Eurocodes to their specific conditions regarding climate, seismic risk, traditions, etc. through the\u00a0<a title=\"Nationally Determined Parameters\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/en-eurocodes-implementation\/nationally-determined-parameters\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"4b56a162-a2b7-456a-a05b-13a6ec1a43d9\">Nationally Determined Parameters<\/a>. Nationally Determined Parameters can also be adapted to the national approach and setup regarding risk and safety factors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\">Worldwide interest<\/h3>\n<p id=\"worldwide\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The Joint Research Centre collects, assesses and disseminates up-to-date information on the international status of Eurocodes adoption in partnership with relevant Directorates-General of the European Commission,\u00a0<a title=\"TAIEX\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/neighbourhood-enlargement\/tenders\/taiex_en\">TAIEX<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0<a title=\"CEN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cen.eu\/\">CEN<\/a>\u00a0, National Standardization Bodies and relevant contact points at national level. The JRC Europe Media Monitor (<a title=\"EMM\" href=\"https:\/\/emm.newsbrief.eu\/overview.html\">EMM<\/a>) tool also facilitates the identification of news relevant to the Eurocodes. Information collected by the JRC includes expression of interest on the Eurocodes by third countries, planned and performed dissemination activities, needs and implementation progress in countries of interest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The status of worldwide interest in the Eurocodes is visualised in the Eurocodes map.
